Who should get priority for limited LTC beds? Should people be forced to take the first appropriate bed that becomes available, even if it isn't their first choice? No easy answers within the scope of a publicly-funded system.

Influenza outbreaks in LTC are incredibly serious and often result in fatalities - to say nothing of the burden the illness places on staff, volunteers and families.

You are contagious and can spread the flu before the onset of symptoms -- so you're spreading it before you even know you're sick.

If you're sick, stay home.
Wash your hands frequently.
Get vaccinated.

Pretty simple, really.

While I was browsing to buy more Crest Whitestrips (I drink copious amounts of coffee), curiosity got the better of me and I took a look.

To my astonishment, The Wrinkly Ranch is ranking in 1st, 2nd & 3rd places, respectively.

... Quite how that translates into sales, I'm not sure; I haven't yet ascertained the predictive correlation between ranking and website traffic & sales' volumes.

Thought I'd share some unsolicited feedback from a new reader.

Getting the tone of the book just right took considerable effort; I aspired to triangulate being equally informative/authentic, respectful and humourous.

Despite what most might think, the Long-Term Care environment isn't always doom & gloom -- life goes on and with it are movements of levity that are as surprising as they are inspiring.

Huge thanks to @100kgeneralstore for the opportunity to set up a table this past Saturday - as well as the friends and former colleagues who came out to support.

Met some wonderful people and enjoyed engrossing conversations with many of the other local vendors from within @100kellogg -- honestly, such an incredible place, I highly recommend the destination to everyone. Go check it out!

... And of course couldn't resist grabbing some hometown swag from the General Store.

Anecdotally, from an LTC resident perspective, one of the most difficult aspects of the pandemic was the elimination and subsequent restriction of in-person visits from family and friends.

While these measures have thankfully started to ease, it is still important to observe basic infection prevention and control (IPAC) precautions when visiting:

Stay home if you're sick.
Cover your cough and sneeze.
Get vaccinated against COVID & influenza.
Wash your hands.

What an unforgettable day -- my first signing even

What an unforgettable day -- my first signing event ever, and in Indigo (North London, Ontario), to boot!

Huge thank you once again to @indigonorthlondon for being so welcoming! Couldn't have asked for anything more.

Also, big thanks to everyone who were kind enough to come out and support (in person or over TXT).

Had several interesting conversations (including with my Grade 4 teacher who came to get her book signed -- while my "writing has improved, my hand writing is now much worse", apparently) and definitely learned A LOT more than I bargained for today. Certainly was one of those weird days.

One last observation to share:

I spent the afternoon right at the front door and watched everyone walk in. Almost nobody came over and most pretty much ignored me as if I wasn't there, didn't exist or was invisible (totally fine - it's what I expected); couldn't help but wonder if this is how the homeless feel as we walk right by them on the street.

... Maybe consider just saying "hello" or simply acknowledging them with a smile next time. It'll make a big difference. Kindness costs nothing.

If you have older family members or friends for whose care you will be responsible, put aside your feelings and be sure to have the tough conversations early on. With respect to their advance care directives and wishes, find out their preferences and make sure absolutely everyone is clear and on the same page well ahead of time. It will ensure the most comfortable transition -- for everyone.

I provide similar examples and discuss this very type of scenario in my book - I do this to provide education; please consider reading it -- for your benefit & for the comfort & dignity of your loved one.
